Murder of youth triggers tension in city

Mangalore Jan 10, 2009: In a daylight attack on two youths in
Katipalla near here Shamsheer (19) a student died and another
identified as Rahamath has been grievously injured. The attacks were
carried out by a group of youth who came in a car and intercepted
them.

The assailants stated to have used deadly weapons like choppers,
swords and longs for the attack; they have escaped for carrying out
their attack. Shamsheer died on the spot while Rahamath is recovering
in a private hospital.

According to the police it was a murder motivated by revenge. Rahamath
was acquitted in a murder case in 2003. He was one of the accused in
the infamous Uday Poojary murder case. After his acquittal he had
migrated to the Gulf and had returned to Katipalla. Uday Poojary was
the member of a saffron brigade and was murdered by five people in
that year.

Following the news of attack spread through the small town few youth
groups belonging to a minority community started attacking houses of
another community, shops and vehicles at random and went on a
destruction spree. During their attacks 11 motorcycles, 3 individual
houses, five buses were damaged and 8 shops have sustained serious
damage. There were about 250 youths in the group that went on a
rampage.

The police opened lathi charge in several places including Ganeshpura,
Katipalla and Chitrapura in order to disperse the crowd. Deputy
Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada Ponnuswamy said the district
administration has clamped section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code till
13 January in and around Surathkal.

Rahamath has told the police that he could identify two persons namely
Girish and Keshav.

Katipalla, Ganeshpura and Chitrapura wore a deserted look following
the incident people living in these areas hid inside their houses
fearing attacks. The Police have also feared that there will be
retaliatory attacks by other groups
